On Saturday, February 23, 2008 our adult faith development
series was graced by the presence of Michael Knox, S.J. a specialist in Church
History. Michael has an expertise in the life of St. Ignatius and used this
gift to help participants explore spiritual discernment.
Using the life of St. Ignatius as a centre-piece for our
spiritual life in general, participants were invited to pay close attention to
much of the unfolding of Ignatius life in order to understand the context
in which the Spiritual Exercises took shape. Indeed, the notions of Jesus as
Lord, and Christians as soldiers for Christ, as well as
the place of desolation and consolation in the discernment process take on
special meaning when one gains a sense of Ignatius life and experiences.
The fact that the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius are a foundation for the
churchs notions of discernment and for the practice of engagements in
retreats was a new and important insight for many gathered. |

highlights of the life of St. Ignatius |
Participants actively engage in dialogue
about the significance of Ignatian spirituality for our spiritual lives in
general. |
The latter part of the day was spent looking at the
implications for spiritual discernment for all of us. As a way to help
participants make the connections and experience the richness of engagement in
the spiritual exercises, Michael led an Ignatian guided prayer and reflection.
Participants expressed special appreciation of the richness of this
experience.
It was a valuable day for all who participated. Many have
expressed a desire to engage in some further forms of Ignatian retreat and
prayer as a result of their good experience of this session. Furthermore, it
helped to highlight, for all, how essential daily prayer and reflection are to
our spiritual life and our ability to discern important directions in life.
The next session will take place on Saturday, March 29,
2008 when Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, S.J. will lead an introduction to
Scripture: what does it mean to be People of the Word? (613)738-5025 (x217) or
abrown@ecclesia-ottawa.org to register. REGISTRATION DEADLINE is Wed., March
26. All are welcome! |
