Childrens Catechists Gather for
Formation in Sacramental Preparation of Children
|
Msgr. Kevin Beach, Vicar General, welcomed 60 people
engaged in sacramental preparation of children to a day of formation on A
Sacramental Handbook for Parishes on Saturday, September 16th,
2006. This lively day provided expert insight into the contents of the
handbook, and highlighted the need for more and ongoing formation and support
for the catechetical ministry of the diocese. Participants were a mixture of
parents and parish priests, catholic school teachers and parish catechists all
of whom play vital roles in the religious education of our children. |

Ms. Heather Reid, assisted by Fr. John van
den Hengel, presides at Morning Prayer |
The day began with Morning Prayer in the chapel which
launched the session very well. Carol Kuzmochka, co-ordinator of adult faith
development and leadership formation, facilitated the session. The
Resource Team, under the leadership of Ms. Heather Reid, provided
wonderful input for the day. This team is comprised of the original authors of
A Sacramental Handbook for Parishes which contains the guidelines
for Sacramental Preparation for the English sector of the Archdiocese. They
described, for participants, the theological foundations of the Sacraments of
Initiation, and led them through each aspect of the handbook. Particular
attention was given to highlighting the particular roles of parents, parish and
school at each stage of the process. A panel of experienced people helped to
shed further light on this important process and helped to fuel very meaningful
dialogue. |
|
Participants gathered in small groups to share insights,
hopes, concerns, and questions. The session was brought to a close with an
opportunity for the important questions, comments and recommendations of
participants to be expressed. Participants were very appreciative of the
session and highlighted the need for regular, ongoing, support and formation
opportunities for all engaged in childrens catechesis. |
